LA Tourism Group Launches New Performance Management Tool May 2005 |

Destination Performance UK (DP:UK ), the membership organisation comprising 140 local authority tourism services, has launched a new performance management tool to assist destinations in benchmarking and comparing performance data with their peers.
The 2005 Baseline Statement, which is coordinated on behalf of the Group by the Research Department at Tourism South East, is a comprehensive survey which will record annually data about each member tourism department. It comprises a number of core and optional questions based on finances, resources, outcomes, service quality and performance indicators.
Reports based on responses to the survey’s questions will be produced by category group (City, Coastal Rural, County, London ) in a way that will enable members to compare their operations with similar destinations. In addition it will enable Tourism SE to draw up year-on-year trend data.
Commenting on the initiative, DP:UK Chairman Peter Lane said, “If LA tourism services and the emerging destination management organisations are to aspire to best practice and quality in all aspects of their operation, it’s essential they have access to a management tool which not only monitors their performance, but also enables them to compare outcomes with other similar destinations.
The Baseline Statement will not only help them to do this, but will also ensure that their service can respond positively to the periodic Comprehensive Performance Assessments through which the Audit Commission will review their local authority’s activities. We believe it will make a valuable contribution to LA tourism services’ business development.”

Destination Performance UK was founded in 1999 as the National Tourism Best Value Group in response to the requirement for local authorities to adopt the principles of best value in providing their services. It changed its name to DP:UK in 2004.
The Group is administered under contract by Tourism South East and comprises a number of generic category groups (City, Coastal, Rural, County, London ) who meet quarterly to review issues relevant to best practice. A management group, comprising representatives of the DCMS, LGA, TMI, the Tourism Society, the BRA, Tourism SE and ILAM along with DP:UK ’s own Chairman, Vice-Chairman and National Co-ordinator, also meets quarterly to determine policy.
