The National Tourism Best Value Group (NTBVG), a membership organisation of more than 140 local authority tourism departments, has been re-branded as Destination Performance UK (DP:UK ) with the strap line ‘Improving Visitor Destinations through Best Practice’.

Historically, the work of the group has focused on helping its member authorities provide best value in their tourism operations, in particular through an annual research exercise undertaken under contract by Tourism South East, collating and comparing data on tourism resources and performance amongst member destinations.

As best value has evolved in to Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) of local authorities, the Group have revisited the original remit for their work and determined that a broadening of emphasis to incorporate the principles of best practice is required. This has stimulated the decision to re-brand as Destination Performance UK.

Commenting on the name change Chairman, Peter Lane, said, “While the work of our Group will still be underpinned by a research-based annual analysis, it’s clear we need to be looking at the broader picture if we are to encourage a greater degree of best practice amongst local authority tourism departments and ultimately high quality destinations. Through our generic category groups DP:UK will therefore be reviewing a range of issues relating to best practice which could involve revenue generation, Tourist Information Centres, marketing and ITC.”

“I should, however, stress that we will be undertaking this shift of emphasis in close collaboration with a number of supportive national bodies who are represented on our Management Group. Above all we are keen to avoid duplication of effort and in particular we want to work closely with the Tourism Management Institute to help with the development of their excellent Destination Management Handbook.”

To promote best practice further amongst local authority tourism departments and destination management organisations DP:UK will be holding a conference at the Birmingham Novotel on 13 May. The conference will address such issues as Comprehensive Performance Assessment, the value of comparative data and creating a quality destination. Breakout session topics will include revenue generation, workforce training and retention and sub-regional partnerships.
